Bengal win national rugby crown


Sports reporter GUWAHATI, Feb 8 – Bengal became the proud winners in the second edition of the National 7-A-Side Rugby Tournament, which concluded at the Nehru Stadium here today. The Bengal team took home the RG Baruah Trophy by winning the championship.In the summit clash Bengal outplayed Maharashtra 15-0 in the one sided affair. The technically sound Bengal players displayed superb skills and over powered the opponent in every department. All the players of the winning team were too fast and they have better understanding. All the players are accurate in passing and creating gaps.In the semifinals Bengal defeated Tamil Nadu 12-5 while Maharshtra downed Delhi 17-7. In the play off match Delhi defeated Tamil Nadu 15-5 for the third position.Host Assam finished poor tenth as they went down to Uttar Pradesh 5-17 after defeating Chattishgarh 27-0 in the losers’ matches.The Director General of Assam Police GM Srivastava gave away the prizes in the closing function. The championship was organized by the Rugby Association of Assam where 12 state teams took part.The other results of the final day were: UP bt Kerala 17-0, Haryana bt Manipur 10-0, Orissa bt J&K 45-0, Haryana bt Orissa 10-5. source: assam tribune
