Gufran Azam to contest for IHF's president post
Bhopal, Feb 8 (PTI) The elections of this year's disband Indian Hockey Federation is expected to be an interesting affair after senior Congress leader Gufran Azam has expressed his intention of contesting for the post of president. The election for the president's post is expected to be a face off between former IHF president KPS Gill and Azam.Gill was elected to the post of IHF president at Bhopal in May 1996 at a time when Azam was also supposed to contest the elections but backed out at the last moment following the then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh's intervention. After Azam's withdrawal, Gill was unanimously elected to the post which he held on for 12 years before the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) dissolved the Gill-backed IHF last year following India's failure to qualify for Beijing Olympics. After taking IHF's reigns in his hand, Gill had elected Azam as the vice-president but he resigned from this post soon after.
