MS Gill likens CWG to great Indian wedding

New Delhi, Feb 19 (PTI) Sports Minister MS Gill today likened the 2010 Commonwealth Games to an Indian wedding and said the umpteen hiccups notwithstanding, the multi-discipline extravaganza would eventually prove a massive success.

Acknowledging the glitches, Gill said like a traditional Indian wedding, things may look little chaotic initially but in the end, the capital would host a grand event in 2010.

"Never mind the delays. Like a seemingly disorganised arrangement in an Indian marriage -- just like in the movie 'Monsoon Wedding' -- we will have a grand Games," Gill said.

He acknowledged construction work at some venues started late and asserted that work progress will have to be constantly monitored to get the infrastructure ready in time.

"I know there were delays in starting work in some venues, especially cycling. Due of some reasons, construction of the velodrome started late by one year. I believe (IOA chief) Suresh Kalmadi when he said infrastructure will be completed in time but the scheduling of the work will have to be constantly watched," Gill said.

"A lot has been done so far but also lot of things need to be done," he said.

Construction for cycling velodrome and shooting range began late though Gill said work on all venues were in full swing and he was optimistic those would be completed in time. PTI
