New Delhi, Feb 16: Sania Mirza clawed her way back into the top 100 with some sterling performances at the Pattaya Open where she finished runners-up and jumped a whopping 39 rungs to be at 87th spot in the latest WTA rankings issued today.
Sania, who missed the Pattaya Open title yesterday going down to Russian Vera Zvonareva, was at 126th spot last week but her dream run in the tournament ensured a significant rise in her rankings.
The Hyderabadi girl also surged ahead by seven places in the doubles rankings, which was largely due to her semi-final appearance in the doubles event of the Pattaya Open, and was ranked 63rd in the world with 1531 points.
However, doubles’ veteran Leander Paes (6940 points) and Mahesh Bhupathi (7225) remained static at their previous week’s position holding on to seventh and fifth positions respectively.
Meanwhile, Rohan Bopanna’s runners-up with his Finnish partner Jarrko Niemenin at the SAP Open in California today, was placed at 78th position in the doubles rankings, a jump of seven places in the rankings.
In the singles’ rankings, Somdev Devvarman slipped two places from his previous week’s 153rd position, while Prakash Amritraj broke into the top 200 to be placed at 199th spot. (Agencies)
