GUWAHATI, Aug 30: Ace runner Abdul Barek, bagged the Guwahati Half Marathon title which was held in the city today. Barek needed less than one hour to complete the 21 kilometre race. The event, which was of two segments– professional and non-professional, was organized by IIT, Guwahati, as a part of their Techniche ’09. Though the condition of the sky was not good this morning, as the city witnessed huge shower last night but still good number of runners took part in today’s race. Altogether 99 participants listed their names in the professional segment while in the non-professional segment the turn out was nearly about 1,000. Asom Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi flagged off the race from Jalukbari and it was culminated at the Latasil ground. Top ten runners of the professional segment were given cash award and Barek, who got the highest amount, received Rs 30,000 for finishing the race first. The other cash award winners: Somesh Uddin (Asom), Saket Ali (Asom), Pankaj Singh (Manipur), Lokendra Sharma (Manipur), Md Saiful Ali (Asom), M Oria (Asom), Y Rameswar (Manipur), N Ajit Singh (Manipur) and Md Saiful Islam (Asom). Top five position holders in men and women categories in non-professional segment: Men-Bipul Barua, Ratul Das, Md Islam, Manoranjan Oria and Bikash Singh. Women- Rishimoni Orang, Surya Bhanu, Laxmi Tirky, Matora Ahmed and Pinki Lahkar. THE SENTINEL
