Diphu’s Morning Star Academy in MUPC

GUWAHATI, Jan 18: Nike announced the kick off of its annual grass root initiative for football in India — the Manchester United Premier Cup (MUPC) India 2010 — which will be conducted across the country from January 19 to February 4. The tournament has attracted participation from teams across different parts of the country such as Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, Bangalore, Orissa, Pondicherry, Kerala, Gujarat, Delhi, Chandigarh, Goa, Kolkata and Assam . This year over 65 teams from across the country are vying to be the Indian finalists.

The tournament is conducted under the aegis of the All India Football Federation. The secretary of the Assam Football Association Ankur Dutta, who also holds the post of vice president in the All India Football Federation, said, “This annual event has helped in popularizing the sport at the grassroots level.”

The participating teams include, Dempo, St Stephens Football Academy, Mahindra United FC, JCT, Pune FC, Viva Kerala, Salgaocar Sports Club, Sporting Club de Goa, Shillong Lajong FC, Sikkim Football Academy, Morning Star Football Academy of Diphu, Mumbai School Sports Association, Pondicherry Coaching Centre etc.

The matches of the North, North East & East Zone qualifiers will be held in Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Gurgaon & Garhi from January 19 to 24. THE SENTINEL
