GURGAON: Two goals within the first four minutes by Pundalik Bellary and Amar Aiyamma set up the tempo for Bharat Petroleum’s 3-2 victory over Punjab National Bank in the semifinals of the Oriental Bank Maharaja Ranjit Singh hockey tournament at the Nehru Stadium here on Sunday.
Gurpreet Singh further consolidated the position with a penalty corner conversion two minutes on resumption, after Bharat Petroleum had led 2-1 at halftime.
Lakhwinder Singh converted a penalty corner in the 16th minute and Navdeep Singh scored one in the 42nd minute, but their combined efforts only helped the bank team reduce the margin.
In the other semifnal, favourite India Colts eased home with a 5-0 triumph over Punjab and Sind Bank. Diwakar Ram converted two penalty corners in the first 12 minutes to get a strong start for the Colts, while Pramod Kumar, Lalit Upadhyay and Belsejer Horo scored three goals in the space of four minutes towards the end to help the team finish with a flourish.
