Sporting Clube de Goa back on top

Special Correspondent THE HINDU

MUMBAI: Three goals and three red cards featured in a 16th round ONGC I-League tie, ending in Sporting Clube de Goa’s 2-1 win over Mumbai FC 2-1 at the Cooperage.

The winner (34 points) returned to the top spot in the 12-team league, while the promoted side from Mumbai (23) slid to the fifth position.

Wilton Gomes showed the way as the Sporting Clube skipper, scoring one goal and creating another to be the clear choice for ‘man of the match’ award.

He set up Joseph Pereira with an accurate floater from the right-back position, and the pocket-sized midfielder responded with a rasping seventh minute volley for Sporting Clube’s first goal.

Gomes showed his understanding of space and deft touch by darting into the goalmouth and tapping a free-kick from Chandrasekhar into the net.

Mumbai FC reduced the margin, via a penalty, converted by Alex Ambrose after the striker was tripped by Mathew Gonsalves.
