Liverpool held by City; United still leads

LIVERPOOL: Dirk Kuyt saved Liverpool from defeat against Manchester City on Sunday, but this 1-1 draw left Rafa Benitez’s side trailing English Premier League football leader Manchester United by seven points.

Kuyt’s 78th-minute goal cancelled out Alvaro Arbeloa’s second half own goal, yet one point is unlikely to be enough for second-placed Liverpool in its increasingly troubled bid to overhaul reigning champion United.

The Reds have now drawn four of their last six league games and, although they still have to face United at Old Trafford next month, they will need a major collapse from the champion to find a first league title since 1990.

In another match, Bobby Zamora finally ended his goal-drought to help Fulham beat struggling West Bromwich Albion 2-0.

Zamora bagged his first league goal since September with a close-range effort in the second half before Andy Johnson added the second for Roy Hodgson’s team at Craven Cottage.

Earlier on Saturday, Manchester United strengthened its hold on first place with its 10th straight victory, beating visiting Blackburn 2-1.

Although Roque Santa Cruz ended United’s record run of 14 league games without conceding a goal, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo scored to take the defending champion to 62 points.

The results: On Sunday: Fulham 2 (Zamora 60, A. Johnson 71) bt West Bromwich 0; Liverpool 1 (Kuyt 78) drew with Manchester City 1 (Arbeloa 51-og).

On Saturday: Manchester United 2 (Rooney 23, Ronaldo 60) bt Blackburn 1 (Santa Cruz 32). — AP
