Assam archers off to an impressive start


Correspondent ITANAGAR, Jan 13 – The women archers of Assam, Binuma Brahma and Pratibha Bodo, began their State’s campaign on an impressive note by winning the second and third places respectively in the inaugural day round of women’s 50 meters archery event at the 16th Senior National Archery Championship that commenced at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Naharlagun today. Nitu Ingole of Maharashtra won the top position.While Maharashtra’s Ingole scored 313 points out of 360 points to win the event, Assam’s Binuma and Pratibha scored 308 and 299 points to be adjudged second and third respectively.In the men’s 50 meters event, Gwimalo Baro of Madhya Pradesh came up with flying colours to get the first spot. He won the inaugural day round by scoring 332 points out of total 360 points, while Amit Rajendra Kalaskar of Jharkhand scored 331 points and Ghasiram Besra of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) scored 330 points to get second and third positions respectively.Altogether 33 teams comprising of 217 archers from various states, including host Arunachal Pradesh, are vying for the top honours in the three-day-long Championship that would continue till January 15 next.While a 12-member team of host Arunachal is participating in the championship, neighbour Assam has sent a ten-member team, comprising six boys and four girls. The host team is pining hope on P Thourani Devi, who has won many medals in national level tournaments.Her coach, Ekashini Devi said that Thourani is the state’s best medal prospect. source: assam tribune
