Assam, Manipur win EZ handball titles

GUWAHATI, March 12 – Assam men and Manipur women clinched titles in the East Zone Handball Championship which concluded at the Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium, in the RG Baruah Sports complex here last evening. In the finals Assam men defeated Bihar 42-23 in a convincing manner while in the women’s category Manipur totally outplayed Assam 20-3.

The Assam men team, the quarterfinalist in the last senior national held at Bisakhapatanam, performed creditably throughout the championship. Right from the pool league matches upto final all the players maintained good form. In final, the title contender Bihar virtually surrendered meekly to the home team. Jharkhand teams took the third positions in both the groups. In the play off matches Jharkhand women beat Nagaland 12-5 while Manipur men gave walk over.

Takeswar Sarma of Assam and Sandhya Rani of Manipur were emerged best players in the men’s and women’s sections respectively. Altogether eight state teams took part in the three-day meet organised by the Assam Handball Association. In the closing function State Social Welfare Minister Akon Bora, former Sports Commissioner Pradip Hazarika, Joint Director Sports Rajib Prakash Baruah, Mifta Uddin Ahmed gave away the prizes.
